BIOGRAPHY
In August 2009, Sarah Outen became the the first woman and youngest person in the world to row solo across the Indian Ocean. In just 124 days, Sarah rowed 4000 miles from Australia to Mauritius, becoming only the 8th woman ever to have rowed solo on the high seas.
Sarah’s plans to row the Indian Ocean first began to take shape whilst she was studying at Oxford Univeristy. With absolutely no experience of ocean-rowing and no funds to back her expedition, Sarah was nevertheless determined to pursue her ambition. Whilst in her final year at Oxford, she began masterminding the entire expedition, from drawing a team around her and raising capital, to driving the media campaign and even building the boat. Motivated by the untimely death of her father, who suffered from rheumatoid arthiritis all of his life, Sarah also decided to set herself the goal of not just breaking 3 world records, but raising £20,000 for arthritis charities in memory of her father, a target which she exceeded by nearly £10,000.
Her journey captured the imagination of people right around the globe, and regular satellite link ups to Australian and British channels and radio shows provided a beautiful insight into her salty world.
Sarah is currently writing her book about the row, due to be published in 2010 whilst simultaneously planning her second expedition - London to London: via the World - a circumnavigation of the globe which will see Sarah rowing, cycling and canoeing on the 30 000 mile journey. She aims to head out on this second, extraordinary adventure in Spring 2011.
MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKING
Planning and executing a successful expedition from a starting point of no experience, no finances and no boat required a huge amount of focus and motivation. Her dogged determination and refusal to be beaten thread her extraordinary story, which she tells with natural ease and bubbly humour, captivating her audience whoever they may be. She is as comfortable talking to business executives as she is to school children – she is a versatile and engaging speaker.
