Celebrating our 4th birthday - at the Palace!

Rebecca Varley

Buckingham Palace

On 10th December Speakers from the Edge celebrated four years in business.  In that time we have organised 18 theatre tours, signed 25 speakers and organised hundreds of motivational presentations for schools and businesses all over the UK, and beyond.  It’s been hard work but also fascinating, fun and utterly inspiring.

We’ve come a long way from our first days, when my co-founder Andy Kirkpatrick and I sat with a pad of paper and jotted down some random ideas!  Four years on, I could not have imagined being invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the Centenary of Scott’s Expedition to the South Pole!  But that is exactly where I found myself last week, rubbing shoulders with some incredible people, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Chris Bonington and Sir David Attenborough!

Driving up to the Palace gates with Karen Darke was an experience I will never forget.  It was a great honour to meet some of the world’s most famous explorers, adventurers and mountaineers.  It was amazing to be inside Buckingham Palace.  And I never though I would ever meet the Queen!  As well as Karen, there were several of our speakers there - Tori James, Simon Yates, Stephen Venables, Ann Daniels, Alastair Humphreys - and several more were invited but unable to attend (ironically Felicity Aston couldn’t attend as she is currently in Antarctica on her very own record-breaking expedition!)

Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take any pictures in the Palace, but you can see some official pictures of the event here.

All in all, it was a pretty cool way to celebrate our fourth birthday!

Next year is already shaping up to be our biggest year yet.  We have five theatre tours planned so far and a new e-booklet showcasing our speakers out in the New Year.  Thank you to everyone who has bought tickets for our events, booked our speakers for a motivational talk or supported us in any way.  Here's to a sucessful 2012 for all.
