Expedition Training with Mark Kalch

This August, Mark Kalch will be giving all would be adventurers a chance to step into his world and learn the essential tools necessary to embark on their very own expedition. His 3-day Expedition School in the French Pyrenees will include a fantastic range of activities, from white-water rafting to mountain trekking and include loads of practical sessions on how to plan an expedition.

Mark Kalch white water rafting"My aim in running the Expedition School is for participants to come away with a pretty good idea of what it takes to envision, plan and execute their own independent expedition.  Obviously, 3 days does not an explorer or adventurer make, however, the simple tools presented will be more than enough to get anyone started.  A big part of the challenge is knowing just where to start.  What things need to be considered?  The school combines discussion sessions and expert workshops with actually getting out into the mountains and onto the river.  The more participants get involved they more they will get out of the weekend.  I for one, cannot wait!"

Mark himself is a veteran of both solo and team expeditions. In the last 13 years he has walked the length of the Omo River in Southern Ethiopia, rafted down the mighty Amazon River from its source in the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil, run rivers in Southern Africa, trekked in the Andes of Peru, forged trails through dense jungles in East Africa and explored deserted tropical islands off the coast of Australia by sea-kayak.

Earlier this year Mark completed his latest solo-expedition, walking from the northernmost point of the Islamic Republic of Iran to its most southerly border in the Persian Gulf.

As well as the physical activities on offer at Mark’s Expedition School, there will be also be an equipment selection clinic, discussion and planning sessions, sponsorship proposal writing, photography and videography class. Participants will be expected to muck in and work as a team, and also, as Mark says, to have a whole lot of fun!

“Big mountains, scenic rivers and sweet surf make this part of the world an ideal base to live adventure. Throw in the closing stages of the Tour de France route and it is difficult to ask for much more in a venue.”
