Sarah Outen Solo Ocean rower, first woman to row the Indian Ocean

It’s a year today since solo ocean-rower Sarah Outen arrived in Mauritius after spending 124 days rowing 4000 miles across the Indian Ocean.

Since she’s been home she has kept herself busy, cycling across Cornwall in aid of cancer charity CoppaFeel, paddling from Bath to London on a Stand Up Paddle, and giving motivational talks about her record-breaking row to school children, University students and businesses.

In 8 months time, she will kayak down the Thames under Tower Bridge and set off on an epic 2 and a half year trip - London to London via the World. Her goal: to make a true circumnavigation of the world under her own power, rowing, cycling and kayaking to cover both green and blue bits of the globe completely on her own.

This Autumn/Winter Sarah will be training hard in preparation for her trip, heading out for some paddling practice with kayaker Justine Curvengen, an 1000 mile bike ride and traveling out to Sakhalin and Japan to recce her routes.

London to London via the World is an ambitious project, requiring meticulous planning and expertise in a number of areas. Sarah has built a great team of people to help make her expedition happen, from logistics experts to personal trainers, but ultimately it is her tenacity and determination that will drive her forward when she is out there by herself.

“Preparing for any expedition takes heaps of planning, a lot of team work, time and money.  For London to London the training is just one aspect, albeit super important; and it is also one with many facets. It is not all about getting big and strong. I need to be technically sound, mentally focused and have supreme endurance across my three disciplines – rowing, cycling and kayaking. We’re talking 2.5 years of expedition here, so my body and mind will take a beating, and I need to be as fully prepared as possible.”

Sarah’s trip will include cycling across Europe, Asia, America and Canada and rowing the North Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.  She will be leaving on 1st April 2011 - we look forward to following her around the world.

Sarah’s book ‘A Dip in the Ocean’ is being published by Summersdale in February 2011.
