Simon Yates to lead World Expeditions trip to Mount Lenin

By Rebecca Varley

Simon Yates

In July 2009, the original trekking and adventure specialists World Expeditions will be giving their travellers the unique opportunity to take a trip to Peak Lenin in Central Asia with world class-mountaineer Simon Yates.

One of the most famous and accomplished mountaineers of his time, Simon has climbed extensively in the some of the most remote mountain ranges of our planet. With his many expeditions to the Pakistani Karakoram, the Tien Shan mountain range in Kazakhstan and the Peruvian Andes, Simon is also an experienced guide who has lead treks all over the world.

This summer he will be lending his expertise to a group of adventurous travellers, leading them on a 17 day trek to the Peak Lenin in Pamir Mountains of Central Asia. The peak, renamed Ibn Sina Peak in 2006, sits on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and is the second-highest point of both countries. Peak Lenin is a popular and straightforward ascent ideal for those with climbing experience or extensive outdoor experience at altitude who want to tackle their first major peak.

Standing at 7134 metres high, climbing Peak Lenin is a demanding but fantastic experience.  As Simon himself explains, "high-altitude mountaineering is very hard work, but extremely rewarding. The views, beauty and sense of space are simply unbeatable and more than compensate for the effort you have to put in."

Simon will need to acclimatise the climbers on the mountain during the first half of the expedition, establishing and stocking their camps, before making a push for the summit under his expert guidance.

The chance to climb with one of the most famous climbers of our time in such a beautiful landscape is a truly unique way to spend your holidays. As Brad Atwal from World Expeditions explains, "World Expeditions has a long history of working with some of the world’s greatest mountaineers and Simon is no exception. Their experience adds a valuable depth to our clients’ experience and we are honored that the likes of Simon choose to work with World Expeditions."

World Expeditions, who have been organising small group trekking and adventure travel holidays since 1975, aim to give their clients “the very best travel experience, designed by people with incredible local knowledge who share our vision of authentic exchange and real exploration with a responsible tourism approach”.

The trip to Peak Lenin is fully supported with a local guide and crew and includes 17 days mountaineering and trekking, with 4 nights spent in a 3 star hotel and 18 nights camping.  To join this expedition you will need a high level of fitness, basic mountaineering skills and prior experience at high altitude.
