Mark Beaumont - Africa Solo

Africa Solo is a story of extreme endurance, through deserts, across mountains and vast savannah.  But most of all it is a story about people - his team back in the UK and the incredible people of Africa, who made this journey possible.  It is a tough, sobering but heart-warming account of a continent that is often portrayed for the wrong reasons.  And Mark's unwavering ambition to find his personal best, to push his limits and set down unbreakable World Records.

Mark has spent the last decade taking on world records and world firsts in ultra-endurance. Best known as a cyclist, he circumnavigated the globe, taking a staggering 82 days off the previous time, pedalled the length of the Americas and recently smashed the Cairo to Cape Town record.

Just 16 months after returning from his first epic world trip, Mark set out on a new challenge: to cycle the length of the American Cordillera - the longest mountain range on the planet. Setting out from Anchorage in Alaska in June 2009, Mark not only cycled all the way down the spine of the Americas to Ushuaia in Argentina, but he also stopped along the way to climb the continent’s two highest peaks, Mt McKinley in Alaska and Aconcagua in Argentina.

In 2011 Mark swapped his bike for a boat and rowed 450 miles through the Canadian Arctic with a team of ocean-rowers, filming the endurance challenge for BBC Scotland.  In January 2012, Mark joined a team of 5 ocean rowers in an attempt to break the world speed record for rowing across the Atlantic.  Just days from achieving their goal, their boat was capsized and, after spending 10 hours on life raft, they were finally rescued by a cargo ship.

On 10 April, 2015, Mark set off from Cairo Tower on a solo mission to cycle the 6,718 mile length of Africa and arrived Mouillie Point, Cape Town, 41 days, 10 hours and 22 minutes later at an average of 160 miles per day, setting an incredible new World Record. As though this wasn't enough of a feat for one year, in August Mark set off to complete the North Coast 500 route around Scotland, non-stop... that's 500 miles in one single ride.

Off the bike, Mark has filmed numerous BBC documentaries, presented for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and written two best-selling books.
